Mémoire de saint Augustin dans l’Église orthodoxe

Dans l’Église orthodoxe, nous célébrons saint Augustin le 28 juin. Cette date n’est pas directement liée à un événement de sa vie. Elle a été choisie probablement parce que, ce même jour, nous faisons aussi mémoire de saint Jérôme, son ami et son correspondant.

Aujourd’hui, on peut se poser une question simple : que serait notre foi sans saint Augustin ?

La réponse est importante. Sans saint Augustin, l’Église aurait probablement eu beaucoup plus de difficultés à comprendre le baptême des enfants. Et il est même possible que, sans lui, les enfants n’auraient pas été baptisés comme aujourd’hui, ou du moins pas compris comme une grâce donnée à tous, petits et grands. Cela aurait changé profondément la vie de l’Église.

Nous lui devons aussi beaucoup d’autres choses : une meilleure compréhension du temps, de la personne humaine, de la conversion et de la confession des péchés. Son influence est très grande dans toute la pensée chrétienne.

Cette année, sa mémoire tombe un dimanche, et ce dimanche nous entendons justement l’Évangile de la guérison du serviteur du centurion de Capharnaüm. Le centurion croit que Jésus peut guérir par une seule parole, sans même entrer dans sa maison. C’est un exemple de foi et d’humilité.

Saint Augustin a vécu quelque chose de semblable. En écoutant saint Ambroise de Milan, il est venu peu à peu à la foi. Il voulait le rencontrer, mais il n’a pas osé entrer chez lui. Par humilité, il est resté à distance. Et c’est cette humilité qui a ouvert son cœur à la grâce de Dieu.

Après sa mort, ses reliques ont été transférées à Pavie, près de Milan. Pavie n’est pas loin de Milan, ainsi les deux saints reposent proches l’un de l’autre après leur mort. Et cela est un signe évident de la grâce divine.

Demandons au Seigneur de nous donner la grâce de suivre les saints, surtout dans leur foi et dans leur humilité.

Commemoration of Saint Augustine in the Orthodox Church

In the Orthodox Church, we celebrate Saint Augustine on June 28. This date is not directly connected to an event in his life. It was probably chosen because, on the same day, we also commemorate Saint Jerome, his friend and correspondent.

Today, we can ask a simple question: what would our faith be without Saint Augustine?

The answer is important. Without Saint Augustine, the Church would most likely have had much greater difficulty understanding the baptism of children. It is even possible that, without him, children would not have been baptized as they are today, or at least not understood as a grace given to all, both small and great. This would have profoundly changed the life of the Church.

We also owe him many other things: a deeper understanding of time, of the human person, of conversion, and of the confession of sins. His influence is very great throughout Christian thought.

This year, his commemoration falls on a Sunday, and on this Sunday we hear precisely the Gospel of the healing of the servant of the centurion of Capernaum. The centurion believes that Jesus can heal with a single word, without even entering his house. It is an example of faith and humility.

Saint Augustine lived something similar. Listening to Saint Ambrose of Milan, he gradually came to faith. He wanted to meet him, but he did not dare enter his house. In humility, he remained at a distance. And it was this humility that opened his heart to the grace of God.

After his death, his relics were transferred to Pavia, near Milan. Pavia is not far from Milan, so the two saints rest close to one another after their death. And this is a clear sign of divine grace.

Let us ask the Lord to grant us the grace to follow the saints, especially in their faith and in their humility.

В Православной Церкви мы совершаем память святого Августина 28 июня. Эта дата не связана напрямую с каким-либо событием его жизни. Вероятно, она была выбрана потому, что в этот же день совершается память святого Иеронима — его друга и корреспондента.

Сегодня мы можем задать простой вопрос: какой была бы наша вера без святого Августина?

Ответ на него очень значим. Без святого Августина Церкви, скорее всего, было бы гораздо труднее осмыслить крещение детей. И вполне возможно, что без него дети не крестились бы так, как сегодня, или, по крайней мере, не понимались бы как носители той же благодати, которая даруется всем — и малым, и великим. Это глубоко изменило бы жизнь Церкви.

Мы также обязаны ему многим другим: более глубоким пониманием времени, человеческой личности, обращения к Богу и покаяния в грехах. Его влияние чрезвычайно велико на всё христианское богословское мышление.

В этом году его память приходится на воскресный день, и в это воскресенье мы слышим Евангелие об исцелении слуги капернаумского сотника. Сотник верит, что Христос может исцелить одним словом, даже не входя в его дом. Это образ веры и смирения.

Святой Августин пережил нечто подобное. Слушая проповеди святителя Амвросия Медиоланского, он постепенно пришёл к вере. Он хотел встретиться с ним лично, но не дерзнул войти к нему. В смирении он остался на расстоянии, и именно это смирение открыло его сердце благодати Божией.

После смерти его мощи были перенесены в Павию, неподалёку от Милана. Павия недалеко от Милана, и поэтому после смерти святые оказываются как бы рядом друг с другом. И в этом виден ясный знак Божией благодати.

Попросим Господа даровать и нам благодать следовать святым — прежде всего в вере и в смирении.
