Они пострадали за Христа в Халкидоне, ныне пригороде Константинополя, который в древности был важным самостоятельным городом.

Мануил, Савел и Исмаил были казнены императором Юлианом Отступником (361–363), чьё правление было отмечено отчаянной попыткой восстановить язычество. Эти трое были персидскими послами. Во время публичного пира Юлиан побуждал их вступить с ним в религиозный спор, но они отказались.

Их пример кажется удивительно современным. Религия часто понимается как соединение божественного и человеческого, однако философ Джорджо Агамбен (1942–…) предлагает иное понимание: религия — это акт разделения — «воздайте Божие Богу, а кесарево кесарю», как говорит Евангелие.

Подлинно религиозный человек различает эти сферы, не смешивает их и не вовлекает Бога в повседневные дела.

Вскоре после вероломного убийства послов Юлианом между Римом и Персией вспыхнула война, на которой был убит сам Юлиан. Вовлечение религии в политику оказывается разрушительным, тогда как правильное разделение религиозного и светского служит во благо.

Лишь тогда, когда Бог перестает быть вовлеченным в служение человеческим замыслам, Он может быть познан как Живой Бог, Который во Христе Иисусе, действием Святого Духа, дарует Свою благодать людям.

On June 30, the last day of the first month of summer, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ismael. Their names sound unusual, which is explained by their Persian origin. They suffered for Christ in Chalcedon, now a suburb of Constantinople, which in antiquity was an important independent city.

Manuel, Sabel, and Ismael were executed by Emperor Julian the Apostate (361–363), whose reign was marked by a desperate attempt to restore paganism. The three were Persian envoys. During a public banquet, Julian urged them to engage him in a religious dispute, but they refused.

“Religion is a personal, inward, and exalted matter, whereas politics is that for which we have been sent as ambassadors, and that which we are engaged in at present.”

Their example seems strikingly modern. Religion is often understood as the union of the divine and the human; however, the philosopher Giorgio Agamben (1942–) proposes a different understanding: religion as an act of separation—“Render unto God the things that are God’s, and unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” as the Gospel says.

A truly religious person distinguishes between these spheres, does not confuse them, and does not draw God into the sphere of everyday worldly affairs.

Shortly after the treacherous killing of the envoys by Julian, a war broke out between Rome and Persia, in which Julian himself was killed. The entanglement of religion and politics can be destructive, whereas their proper distinction serves the common good.

Only when God is no longer enlisted in the service of human purposes can He be encountered as the living God, who, in Christ Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, grants His grace.

Le 30 juin, dernier jour du premier mois de l’été, l’Église orthodoxe célèbre la mémoire des saints martyrs Manuel, Sabel et Ismaël. Leurs noms paraissent inhabituels, ce qui s’explique par leur origine perse. Ils souffrirent pour le Christ à Chalcédoine, aujourd’hui un faubourg de Constantinople, qui était dans l’Antiquité une importante cité indépendante.

Manuel, Sabel et Ismaël furent exécutés par l’empereur Julian the Apostate (361–363), dont le règne fut marqué par une tentative désespérée de restaurer le paganisme. Tous trois étaient des ambassadeurs perses. Au cours d’un banquet public, Julien les invita à engager avec lui une controverse religieuse, mais ils refusèrent.

« La religion est une affaire personnelle, intérieure et élevée, tandis que la politique est la mission pour laquelle nous avons été envoyés comme ambassadeurs et l’activité à laquelle nous nous consacrons à présent. »

Leur exemple paraît étonnamment actuel. La religion est souvent comprise comme l’union du divin et de l’humain. Peu après l’assassinat perfide des ambassadeurs par Julien, une guerre éclata entre Rome et la Perse, au cours de laquelle Julien lui-même trouva la mort. L’imbrication de la religion et de la politique peut être destructrice, tandis que leur juste distinction est au service du bien commun.

Ce n’est que lorsque Dieu n’est plus enrôlé au service des desseins humains qu’Il peut être rencontré comme le Dieu vivant qui, dans le Christ Jésus, par l’action de l’Esprit Saint, accorde sa grâce.
