Совместное празднование в честь святых Бориса и Глеба в мае было установлено в связи с перенесением мощей святых братьев и положением их в новой каменной церкви в присутствии князей, митрополита, народа и духовенства в 1072 году. Событие стало актом канонизации и сделало их покровителями княжеского рода и Русской Церкви. Поскольку в крещении князья носили имена Роман и Давид, святые также являются небесными покровителями тех, кто носят эти имена.

Святые Борис и Глеб отказались поднять оружие против своего брата Святополка в борьбе за княжеский престол в 1015 году, и были убиты, что сделало их страстотерпцами, то есть теми, кто добровольно принял страдание ради следования заповедям Евангелия, но не в знак догматического свидетельства веры, как это было с мучениками Древней Церкви.

В этом своем деянии Борис и Глеб последовали примеру чешского князя Вячеслава, который за восемьдесят лет до этого, в 935, принял страдание от своего брата Болеслава в весьма схожих обстоятельствах. Всего три дня спустя после этого основного празднования памяти Бориса и Глеба праздновал свой день рождения другой страстотерпец Православной Церкви, последний русский самодержец Царь Николай.

The joint celebration in honor of Saints Boris and Gleb in May was established in connection with the transfer of their relics and their enshrinement in a new stone church in the presence of the princes, the metropolitan, the people, and the clergy in 1072. The event served as an act of canonization and made them the patron saints of the princely family and the Russian Church. Since the princes were baptized with the names Roman and David, the saints are also the heavenly patrons of those who bear these names.

Saints Boris and Gleb refused to take up arms against their brother Svyatopolk in the struggle for the princely throne in 1015, and were killed, which made them passion-bearers, that is, those who voluntarily accepted suffering for the sake of following the commandments of the Gospel, but not as a sign of dogmatic witness to the faith, as was the case with the martyrs of the Early Church.

In this act, Boris and Gleb followed the example of the duke Wenceslaus of Bohemia, who, eighty years earlier, in 935, had suffered at the hands of his brother Boleslav under very similar circumstances. Just three days after this main commemoration of Boris and Gleb, another passion-bearer of the Orthodox Church, the last Russian emperor, Tsar Nicholas, celebrated his birthday.

Saints Venceslaus, Boris, and Gleb, Nicholas, martyrs and passion-bearers, pray to God for us! Christ is risen, and we too shall rise with you, our holy brothers!

La fête commune en l'honneur des saints Boris et Gleb, célébrée en mai, a été instituée à l'occasion du transfert de leurs reliques et de leur installation dans une nouvelle église en pierre, en présence des princes, du métropolite, du peuple et du clergé, en 1072. Cet événement a fait office de canonisation et a fait d'eux les saints patrons de la famille princière et de l'Église russe. Comme les princes avaient été baptisés sous les noms de Roman et David, les saints sont également les patrons célestes de ceux qui portent ces noms.

Les saints Boris et Gleb refusèrent de prendre les armes contre leur frère Sviatopolk lors de la lutte pour le trône princier en 1015, et furent tués, ce qui fit d'eux des porteurs de la Passion, c'est-à-dire ceux qui ont volontairement accepté la souffrance pour suivre les commandements de l'Évangile, mais non en signe de témoignage dogmatique de la foi, comme ce fut le cas pour les martyrs de l'Église primitive.

Par cet acte, Boris et Gleb ont suivi l’exemple du duc Wenceslas de Bohême qui, quatre-vingts ans plus tôt, en 935, avait souffert aux mains de son frère Boleslas dans des circonstances très similaires. À peine trois jours après cette commémoration principale de Boris et Gleb, un autre martyr de l’Église orthodoxe, le dernier empereur russe, le tsar Nicolas, fêtait son anniversaire.
