1, 14 (1) мая Церковь празднует память святого преподобного Никифора Хиосского (1750–1821). Святой прославился, как аскет, учитель, миссионер, просветитель, и благотворитель. Он был иеромонахом, игуменом монастыря, составителем служб, сборников поучений и житий святых. В духовном общении и сотрудничестве Никифор находился со значимыми старцами и духовными наставниками своего времени, среди которых Макарий Коринфский и Святогорец Никодим. Вся биография Никифора связана с церквями и монастырями родного для него острова Хиос.

2, Своим духовным чадам он заповедовал сажать как можно больше деревьев, ибо верил, что они послужат источником благосостояния для окрестных селений и, в очах Божьих, помогут загладить вину совершенных грехов. Эта трогательная подробность роднит святого Никифора с великими древними святыми аскетами, которые, подобно Исааку Сирийскому, жалели даже червей земных, и смотрели на природу бережливым и одновременно сострадательным взглядом, видели мир глазами Милосердного Бога.

3, В отличие от Русской Церкви, в которой Новомучениками преимущественно называются святые, пострадавшие в период большевистских гонений, в греческих Церквях новомучениками именуются святые, которые, будучи мусульманами, по рождению или в силу отречения от православной веры, вернулись в Церковь через открытое исповедание.

4, Особенное дерзновение святого Никифора заключалось в трудах по духовному окормлению новых мучеников Греческой Церкви, заключавшийся в том, чтобы убедить и укрепить тех, кто прежде отрекся от православной веры и перешел в ислам из-за страха или выгоды, вернуться в Церковь через публичное исповедание перед лицом османских властей. Трагическим образом, последние считали это отречением и карали исповедников смертью. Духовными чадами отца Никифора были почитаемые греческие новомученики Марк Смирнский (+1801), Дмитрий Пелопонесский (+1803) и Ангелис Хиосский (+1813).

5, Точный день мирной кончины святого Никифора неизвестен, память его установлено праздновать 1 мая 1821 года. Почитание его во святых началось практически сразу после исхода из этого мира. Святой Никифор, моли Бога о нас, вместе с тобой провозглашаем, мы на земле, ты на небе, Христос Воскресе!

1, On May 14, the Church commemorates Saint Nikephoros of Chios (1750–1821). The saint became renowned as an ascetic, teacher, missionary, educator, and philanthropist. He was a hieromonk, abbot of a monastery, and the author of liturgical services, collections of sermons, and hagiographies. Nikephoros maintained spiritual communion and collaboration with prominent elders and spiritual teachers of his time, including Macarius of Corinth and Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain. His entire life is connected with the churches and monasteries of his native island Chios.

2. He instructed his spiritual children to plant as many trees as possible, for he believed that they would serve as a source of prosperity for the surrounding villages and, in God’s eyes, help atone for sins committed. This touching detail links Saint Nikephoros to the great ascetic saints of late antiquity, who, like Isaac the Syrian, had compassion even for the worms of the earth, viewed nature with a gaze that was both protective and compassionate, and saw the world through the eyes of the Merciful God.

3. Unlike the Russian Church, where the term “New Martyrs” is used primarily to refer to saints who suffered during the period of Bolshevik persecution, in the Greek Churches, the term “New Martyrs” is applied to saints who, having been Muslims by birth or by renouncing the Orthodox faith, returned to the Church through open confession.

4, Saint Nikephoros’ particular boldness lay in his efforts to provide spiritual guidance to the new martyrs of the Greek Church, which consisted of persuading and strengthening those who had previously renounced the Orthodox faith and converted to Islam out of fear or self-interest, to return to the Church through a public confession before the Ottoman authorities. Tragically, the latter regarded this as apostasy and sentenced the confessors to death. Among Father Nikephoros’ spiritual children were the venerated Greek New Martyrs Mark of Smyrna (d. 1801), Demetrius of the Peloponnese (d. 1803), and Angelis of Chios (d. 1813).

5, The exact date of Saint Nikephoros’ peaceful passing is unknown; his feast day was established as May 1, 1821. His veneration as a saint began almost immediately after his departure from this world. Saint Nikephoros, pray to God for us; together with you, we proclaim—we on earth, you in heaven—Christ is Risen!

1, Le 14 mai, l'Église célèbre la mémoire de saint Nicéphore de Chios (1750-1821). Le saint s'est illustré comme ascète, enseignant, missionnaire, éducateur et bienfaiteur. Il était prêtre-moine, higoumène d'un monastère, auteur de textes liturgiques, de recueils patristiques et de vies de saints. Nicéphore entretenait une communion spirituelle et une collaboration avec d’éminents théologiens et maître spirituels de son temps, parmi lesquels Macaire de Corinthe et Nicodème l’Hagiorite. Toute la biographie de Nicéphore est liée aux églises et aux monastères de son île natale Chios.

2. Il recommandait à ses enfants spirituels de planter autant d'arbres que possible, car il croyait qu'ils seraient une source de prospérité pour les villages environnants et, aux yeux de Dieu, aideraient à expier les péchés commis. Ce détail émouvant rapproche saint Nicéphore des grands saints ascètes de l'Antiquité tardive qui, à l'instar d'Isaac le Syrien, avaient pitié même des vers de terre et portaient sur la nature un regard à la fois respectueux et compatissant, voyant le monde à travers les yeux du Dieu miséricordieux.

3. Contrairement à l’Église russe, où l’on désigne principalement comme nouveaux martyrs les saints qui ont souffert pendant la période des persécutions bolcheviques, dans les Églises grecques, on appelle nouveaux martyrs les saints qui, étant musulmans de naissance ou ayant renoncé à la foi orthodoxe, sont revenus à l’Église par une profession de foi ouverte.

4, L'audace particulière de saint Nicéphore résidait dans ses efforts pour offrir un accompagnement spirituel aux nouveaux martyrs de l'Église grecque, qui consistaient à persuader et à fortifier ceux qui avaient auparavant renoncé à la foi orthodoxe et s'étaient convertis à l'islam par crainte ou par intérêt personnel, afin qu'ils reviennent à l'Église par une confession publique devant les autorités ottomanes. Malheureusement, ces derniers y virent un renoncement et condamnèrent les confesseurs à mort. Parmi les fils spirituels du père Nicéphore figuraient les nouveaux martyrs grecs vénérés Marc de Smyrne (+1801), Dimitrios du Péloponnèse (+1803) et Angelis de Chios (+1813).

5, On ignore la date exacte du décès paisible de saint Nicéphore ; sa fête a été fixée au 1er mai 1821. Sa vénération parmi les saints a commencé pratiquement aussitôt après son départ de ce monde. Saint Nicéphore, prie Dieu pour nous ; avec toi, nous proclamons : nous sur terre, toi au ciel, le Christ est ressuscité !
