2, О святом Крискенте известно, что он был молод, но, в силу благородства происхождения, занимал немаловажное положение в городе. Однажды он стал свидетелем того, как огромная толпа горожан направлялась в языческое капище для совершения жертвоприношения. Охваченный силой благодати Духа Святого, подобно библейским пророкам, он стал увещать людей остановиться и поклониться Единому Богу, Отцу Господа Иисуса Христа. Будучи арестован, он был принуждаем принести жертву идолам, но отказался это сделать.

3, Пользуясь своим знакомством с отцом святого Крискента, правитель советовал ему принести совершить жертвоприношение формальным образом, чтобы только отвести от себя обвинение в пренебрежении общественными ценностями римского общества, которому подвергались христиане. «Невозможно, чтобы тело делало не то, что мыслит душа, так как душа управляет и мыслит телом», - агиография сохранила такой ответ мученика. Он представляет собой подлинное исповедание веры в единство души и тела человека и единой ответственности всего человеческого существа пред Богом. 1, On April 26, the Church commemorates Saint Crescens of Myra. The Latin name “Crescens” translates as “growing” or “increasing.” For churches dedicated to Saint Nicholas, in particular, and for Orthodox Christians who venerate this saint in general, it is especially gratifying to realize that the Church’s memory has preserved the remembrance of the saints who shone in the city of Myra, and even more so of those by whose example Saint Nicolas was raised in the faith. Records indicate that in ancient times, there was a basilica in Myra of Lycia dedicated to the local martyrs Crescens and Dioscorides. Unfortunately, the exact date of the martyr’s suffering is unknown.

2, It is known that Saint Crescens was young, but, by virtue of his noble birth, he held a position of some importance in the city. One day, he witnessed a huge crowd of townspeople heading toward a pagan temple to offer sacrifices. Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, like the prophets of the Bible, he began to urge the people to stop and worship the One God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. After being arrested, he was forced to offer a sacrifice to the idols, but he refused to do so.

3, Taking advantage of his acquaintance with Saint Crescens’ father, the governor advised him to offer a sacrifice as a mere formality, simply to ward off the accusation of disregarding the public values of Roman society—an accusation to which Christians were frequently subjected. “It is impossible for the body not to do as the soul thinks, since the soul governs and moves the body,”—hagiography has preserved this response from the martyr. It represents a genuine confession of faith in the unity of the human soul and body and the unified responsibility of the entire human being before God. In our time, which—contrary to biblical belief—asserts that the human body belongs not to the realm of nature but to the realm of culture and can therefore be subject to unlimited manipulation—this fundamental opposition between “nature and culture”—such a testimony from an ancient martyr is of the utmost importance.

1, Le 26 avril, l’Église célèbre la mémoire de saint Crescens de Myre. Le nom latin « Crescens » signifie « qui grandit » ou « qui s’accroît ». Pour les églises dédiées à saint Nicolas, en particulier, et pour les chrétiens orthodoxes qui vénèrent ce saint en général, il est particulièrement gratifiant de constater que la mémoire de l’Église a préservé le souvenir des saints qui ont brillé dans la ville de Myre, et plus encore de ceux par l’exemple desquels saint Nicolas a été élevé dans la foi. Des sources indiquent qu'il existait, dans les temps anciens, à Myre de Lycie, une basilique dédiée aux martyrs locaux Crescens et Dioscoride. Malheureusement, on ignore à quelle époque exactement le saint martyr a subi le martyre.

2, On sait que saint Crescens était jeune, mais, grâce à sa noble naissance, il occupait une fonction d’une certaine importance dans la ville. Un jour, il vit une foule immense de citadins se diriger vers un temple païen pour y offrir des sacrifices. Rempli de la puissance du Saint-Esprit, à l’instar des prophètes de la Bible, il se mit à exhorter le peuple à s’arrêter et à adorer le Dieu unique, le Père du Seigneur Jésus-Christ. Après avoir été arrêté, il fut contraint d’offrir un sacrifice aux idoles, mais il refusa de le faire.

3, Profitant de sa relation avec le père de saint Crescens, le gouverneur lui conseilla d’offrir un sacrifice, par pure formalité, simplement pour écarter l’accusation de mépriser les valeurs publiques de la société romaine — une accusation dont les chrétiens faisaient souvent l’objet. « Il est impossible au corps de ne pas faire ce que pense l’âme, puisque c’est l’âme qui gouverne et anime le corps » — l’hagiographie a conservé cette réponse du martyr. Cela constitue une véritable profession de foi dans l’unité de l’âme et du corps humains, ainsi que dans la responsabilité unifiée de l’être humain tout entier devant Dieu. À notre époque, qui — contrairement à la croyance biblique — affirme que le corps humain n’appartient pas au domaine de la nature mais à celui de la culture, et qu’il peut donc être soumis à des manipulations illimitées — cette opposition fondamentale entre « nature et culture » —, un tel témoignage, provenant d'un martyr de l'Antiquité, revêt une importance capitale.
