1, 23 апреля Церковь празднует память святого мученика Григория V Патриарха Константинопольского. 1, On April 23, the Church commemorates Saint Gregory V, Patriarch of Constantinople and martyr. On Easter 1821, which at that time fell on April 10 according to the Julian calendar, the Patriarch was hanged at the main gates of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Phanar district of Constantinople. The saint’s body remained in this apocalyptic state for three days, after which it was thrown into the sea by his murderers or their accomplices.

2, The sailors of the Russian ship, which prophetically bore the name of Saint Nicholas of Myra, recovered the saint’s relics and transported them to Odessa, where they were identified. They were subsequently transferred to Greece, where they rest to this day in Athens at the Cathedral of the Annunciation. The saint was crucified—and such a tragic hanging is nothing other than a sign of crucifixion—as punishment for the Greek uprising for independence against the Ottoman rule of Constantinople, in order to intimidate the rebellious Greeks.

3, Greek orthodox tradition refers to saints who suffered in modern times for refusing to convert to Islam as “new martyrs.” Since Saint Gregory was killed for advocating the liberation of the Orthodox Greek nation, the Church of Greece honored him as the “Martyr of the Nation,” or, in Greek, “Ethnomartyr”. Contrary to the executioners’ expectations, his death not only failed to intimidate people but also lent the cause of liberation from “Turkocracy”—as Ottoman rule in Greece was called—an irreversible and mass character. In memory of the saint, the main gates of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople have remained closed ever since.

Contrairement aux attentes des bourreaux, sa mort, loin d’intimider la population, a au contraire conféré à la cause de la libération de la « turcocratie » – nom donné à la domination ottomane en Grèce – un caractère irréversible. En mémoire du saint, les portes principales du Patriarcat œcuménique de Constantinople sont restées fermées depuis lors.
